Πέθανε σε ηλικία 94 ετών ο Σίντνεϊ Πουατιέ, ένας από τους κορυφαίους ηθοποιούς όλων των εποχών. Μάλιστα, είναι ο Αφροαμερικανός που βραβεύτηκε με Όσκαρ ερμηνείας.
Ο Σερ Σίντνεϊ Πουατιέ (αγγλικά: Sidney Poitier) γεννήθηκε στις 20 Φεβρουαρίου 1927 ήταν Αμερικανός ηθοποιός του κινηματογράφου, βραβευμένος με Όσκαρ Α’ Ανδρικού Ρόλου για την ταινία του 1963 Κάτω από το Βλέμμα του Θεού (Lillies of the Field).
Ήταν ο πρώτος Αφροαμερικανός ηθοποιός που έλαβε αυτή την τιμή (24 χρόνια μετά τη νίκη της Χάτι ΜακΝτάνιελ που είχε βραβευτεί με Όσκαρ Β’ Γυναικείου Ρόλου το 1939).
Ο Πουατιέ ήταν επίσης σκηνοθέτης, συγγραφέας και διπλωμάτης.
Η επιτυχία του ηθοποιού συνεχίστηκε κατά τη δεκαετία του ’60 και το 1967 είχε τρεις επιτυχημένες ταινίες στο Αμερικανικό Box-Office: Ιστορία ενός Εγκλήματος (In the Heat of the Night), Μάντεψε ποιος θα ‘ρθει το βράδυ (Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner) και Στον Κύριο μας με Αγάπη (To Sir, with Love), οι οποίες πραγματεύονταν το θέμα του ρατσισμού. Ο ηθοποιός είναι επίσης γνωστός για τη συμμετοχή του στις ταινίες: Η Ζούγκλα του Μαυροπίνακα (Blackboard Jungle, 1955), Έσπασα τα Δεσμά μου (Edge of the City, 1957), Όταν σπάσαμε τις αλυσίδες (The Defiant Ones, 1958), Ένα Σταφύλι στον Ήλιο (A Raisin in the Sun, 1960) και Τυφλός Άγγελος (A Patch of Blue). Το 1972 έκανε το σκηνοθετικό του ντεμπούτο με την ταινία Οι Δυο Συνένοχοι (Buck and the Preacher).
Το Αμερικανικό Ινστιτούτο Κινηματογράφου τον έχει κατατάξει στην 22η θέση στη λίστα με τους 25 μεγαλύτερους σταρ όλων των εποχών.
Το 2002 ο ηθοποιός βραβεύτηκε με Τιμητικό Όσκαρ από την Αμερικανική Ακαδημία Κινηματογραφικών Τεχνών και Επιστημών, για τα επιτεύγματά του ως καλλιτέχνης, αλλά κι ως άνθρωπος και το 2009 τιμήθηκε με το Προεδρικό Μετάλλιο της Ελευθερίας από τον πρόεδρο των Η.Π.Α. Μπαράκ Ομπάμα. Από το 1997 ήταν πρέσβης για λογαριασμό του νησιών Μπαχάμες (απ’ όπου κατάγεται και έζησε τα παιδικά του χρόνια), από τις οποίες κατάγεται στην Ιαπωνία.
